Overview
The Freedom of Information Act (2000) applies the principal that people have a right to know about the activities of public authorities (unless there is a good reason not to). The presumption in favour of disclosure means local government staff have a obligation to be open and transparent.
This three hour live online course (with a professional course leader) will familiarise you with the freedom of information act, and how to fulfil your duties and obligations.
In addition, the course will explore FOIA, personal information, GDPR and right of access (commonly known as making a Subject Access Request SAR).
Who should attend?
This course is well suited for any council employee who potentially may have to respond or reply to FOIA requests or SAR requests. The course also provides a good general understanding of the legislation, meaning its suitable for anybody who needs to better understand the Act.

- The public interest test
- Managing FOI requests (FOI triage)
- Communicating with the applicant
- Dealing with vexatious and repeated requests

- Personal Information and GDPR
- Right of Access (SAR)
Learning Objectives (success criteria)
By the end of this course, delegates will have a clear understanding of what the FOI legislation is, and their obligations and responsibilities.
Delegates will also be better equipped in dealing with FOI and SAR requests and will learn a number of new skills and techniques to make the process easier and more efficient.
